Abstract:

Miranda v. County of Lake, 900 F.3d 335 (7th Cir. 2018) involves the death of a pretrial detainee, and it is a death that need not have occurred. Fifty-two-year-old Gomes, an Indian national, died from the complications of starvation and dehydration. The death, however, was ruled a suicide since Gomes simply refused to eat or take water. Gomes deterioration was clearly visible to staff but no intervention to save her from herself was undertaken.
