Abstract:

This is the first part of an article that appeared as an ITSMR Research Note in late 2012. The remainder of the article will appear in future issues of IDU. The report contains significant information about drugs and vehicle crashes in New York that can serve as a cautionary tale to other states. Its key finding is that 16% of 2011’s motor vehicle fatalities involved drugs. For the same period, 31% of all motor vehicle fatalities in New York State were alcohol related. In New York State, one out of six motor vehicle fatalities involved a drug impaired driver, whether that drug was illicit or prescription.
