Abstract:

Former Congressman John Sweeney has turned his life around. He is now an advocate for an alcoholism treatment community in upstate New York, and has worked with Father Peter Young’s Altamont Program. He has spoken at law enforcement trainings on the sensitive issue of drunk driving by police officers in the Choices 301 program at the Beacon of Hope in Altamont, NY. Although his life spiraled downward in a very public manner, Congressman Sweeney’s narrative shows that the offender can become an asset to his community once sober. Sweeney’s narrative is unique in its candor and honesty.
