Abstract:
Most DUI/DWI policymakers, administrators, and facilitators agree that the purpose of offender education programs is to reduce recidivism and improve public safety. Given that studies estimate that most impaired drivers take 200 to 2000 impaired driving trips before being arrested, it is clear that a reduction in recidivism requires a significant change in behavior, whether that means driving behavior, drinking behavior, or both. This article discusses the quality research available that can enhance our efforts to motivate offenders toward change and give them a roadmap for success. Keywords: DUI/DWI; Changing for Good (1991); National Cancer Institute; Centers for Disease Control; National Health Service of Great Britain; US Federal Bureau of Prisons; Wisconsin Department of Transportation; Motivational Interviewing: Preparing People to
