Abstract:

When someone is injured or killed by the actions of an impaired driver, there is no less impact on the survivors than there would be in any other type of violent crime, but some agencies treat automobile crashes less seriously than murders or crimes involving weapons. The automobile, when driven by an impaired driver, is a “lethal weapon,” and the twisted and crushed remains of crashed vehicles serve as testimony to the violent nature and serious consequences of collisions. This article focuses on how best to approach investigating a crash scene and what factors at the scene and in the investigation must be taken into account.
