Abstract:

Since 1990, as part of a partnership with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), General Motors (GM) developed “black box” sensors now available in several million vehicles. The black box is actually a Crash Data Retrieval System (CDR) composed of hardware and software capable of downloading crash data information. Originally designed to learn more about the effectiveness of air bag systems, advances in chip capability allow CDR systems to collect data from multiple sensors in the vehicle, storing a variety of measurements. This article looks at the use of this data and how it is collected.
