Abstract:

Of the nearly 30 million Type 1 and Type 2 diabetics in the United States, the vast majority are licensed to drive. Yet, studies have shown a 12% to 19% increase in the number of accidents that diabetics have. However, the majority of diabetics pose no threat to public safety at all. The most important factor to consider when attempting to sort these harmless individuals from diabetics who are at a greater risk is their recent history of hypoglycemic episodes and, in particular, their history of hypoglycemic episodes while driving, as their risk of having a diabetes-related accident increases exponentially with each episode. This article explores the dificulties of identifying at-risk diabetics and determining the likelihood of hypoglycemic episode while driving.
