Abstract:

The task force report of the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA), entitled “A Call to Action: Changing the Culture of Drinking at U.S. Colleges,” has two aspects that deserve special attention. First, the task force commissioned 22 different studies on college alcohol issues. The results of those studies were synthesized by the task force and one of their goals was to estimate the true extent of the problem. This article discusses the statistics present on college campuses, what strategies have seemed to work, and the conflicting philosophies of administrators when it comes to cracking down on college drinking.
