Abstract:

In this article I describe eight important things a student affairs program can do to responsibly address the health risk that is young adult suicide. These eight recommendations comprise what I believe are essential elements of a “multifaceted and comprehensive” approach to suicide prevention. Lloyd Potter, director of the Suicide Prevention Resource Center (SPRC, see Sidebar), says that “multifaceted and comprehensive” describe the only adequate response to the complex and highly individual etiology of suicide.
