Abstract:

Our regular review of the research literature on student behavior and development examines how bystander intervention programs can contribute to a safer campus; improving the performance of campus alert systems; the opposing arguments in the debate over firearms on campus; and how the University of Massachusetts at Dartmouth reacted when it was learned that one of its students, Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, had been one of two perpetrators in the 2013 Boston Marathon bombing. Reviews include “Evaluation of the Green Dot Bystander Intervention to Reduce Interpersonal Violence Among College Students Across Three Campuses” by Coker, A.L., Fisher, B.S., Bush, H.M., Swan, S.C., Williams, C.M., Clear, E.R., & Degue, S. in the journal Violence Against Women; “Alerting a Campus Community: Emergency Notification From a Public’s Perspective” by Madden, S. in Journal of Contingencies and Crisis Management; “Preventing School Violence: Assessing Armed Guardians, School Policy, and Context” by Crawford, C., & Burns, R. in the journal Policing: An International Journal of Police Strategies and Management; “Gang Activity on Campus: A Crisis Response Case Study” Shaw, M., & Meaney, S. in Journal of Cases in Educational Leadership; and “‘He’s One of Ours’—A Case Study of a Campus Response to Crisis” by Jenkins, S., & Goodman, M. published in Journal of Contingencies and Crisis Management
