Abstract:
When Northwestern University cancelled a food service contract with Sodexo because the rabbi in charge of certifying Sodexo’s Kosher food preparation was associated with a campus fraternity sanctioned for underage alcohol use, the rabbi and fraternity filed suit charging anti-Semitism. While plaintiff was able to demonstrate that the university did indeed treat other fraternities differently, Northwestern was able to prove a pattern of underage drinking violations and won at the appellate level. In other cases, a SUNY Brockport fraternity house must defend itself against liability arising from the poor conditions in an off-campus residence used as a party house by fraternity members, and from which a drunk student fell two stories; graduates of Chicago-Kent College of Law failed in their attempt to sue the law school for Consumer Fraud when they were unable to gain employment in their profession after graduating with law degrees. Keywords: Lubavitch-Chabad of Ill., Inc. v.
