Abstract:
Reviews a new report, “Managing Prison Health Care Spending,” issued by the Pew Charitable Trusts and MacArthur Foundation (October, 2013). Three key factors are driving up state prison health-care costs, according to Pew: aging inmates, the high prevalence of physical and mental illness, and the costly nature of delivering health care to a prison’s inmates. Medicaid financing for eligible prisoners’ health care services could help reduce some of this cost, but states have been reluctant to use this option. Keywords: Affordable Care Act; Medicaid
