Abstract: 

Dr. Pinta was a psychiatry consultant to Ohio’s prison system from 1972 to 2007 and practiced at both men’s and women’s prisons and at a residential-treatment unit (RTU) for male inmates. In this article, Dr. Pinta provides a wide-ranging review of the key challenges faced by health care providers in the correctional setting, and offers constructive guidance for navigating these issues successfully to produce positive health outcomes consisent with instituional goals.
