Abstract:

There are many barriers to the appropriate management of BTP, including poor recognition and/or assessment of BTP, inadequate knowledge of its management, and regulatory and liability concerns regarding the use of opioids for BTP treatment. Patients may be hesitant to report BTP symptoms because of worries that this may indicate a worsening in their condition or because they do not want to burden anyone with their complaints. Patients may also have concerns about addiction to analgesics or potentially adverse effects of medications. Additionally, the health care system presents its own challenges, including inadequate reimbursement policies, regulations and restrictions for controlled substances, and issues with access to treatment.
