Abstract:

The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (ACA) provides several new options for inmate health care, some of which have already gone into effect. The ACA also creates a significant opportunity for prisons and jails to interact with state-based health benefit exchanges, to enroll detainees into health care at release or parole, and to provide essential incarceration data to the exchange for use in determining eligibility for insurance and subsidies. This article provides a general overview of key elements of the ACA and insight into the implications of Medicaid expansions and health benefit exchanges for correctional institutions and inmates.
