Abstract:
The growth rate for inmates is 8 percent per year, which outpaces overall population growth statistics. In most institutions today, the majority of these inmates visit local hospitals to undergo ambulatory surgical procedures. U.S. Medical Group, Inc. (USMG) uses a novel approach to inmate surgical needs, bringing a Mobile Surgical Unit (MSU) on to the Department of Corrections’ (DOC) premises, both at the North Florida Reception Center in Lake Butler, Florida, since April 1997, and recently to Central Prison in Raleigh, North Carolina. Since its inception at the North Florida Reception Center, more than 2,800 cases have been performed on the MSU.Keywords: hospital on wheels, anesthesia, surgery, pre-op, post-op, security risks, privatization
