Abstract:
The Medical Needs of a Graying Prison Population. The U.S. prison population is aging. In 1998, there were over 83,000 inmates over the age of fifty. This number is expected to double by 2008. The ramifications are enormous, even if measured only in terms of cost. While it costs about $25,000 to incarcerate an average inmate, it costs up to three times more if the inmate is elderly. Respondeat superior is a Latin term for a particular legal theory that imputes responsibility, and liability, onto a superior based upon the actions of those he supervises. This year both a federal court and a state court each ruled in cases involving this doctrine as it applies to correctional institutions – and they reached opposite conclusions. Must Religion Go Hand-in-Hand With Addiction Treatment? Alcoholics Anonymous (AA), and its twelve-step progeny, are the primary treatment tools in the criminal justice system. Forty-four states use AA or Narcotics Anonymous or Cocaine Anonymous for drug treatment in their prisons and jails. Keywords: diabetes, Rouse v. Plantier, Blood Sugar Levels, diet, Respondeat superior, Mullins v. Kalns, Kerr v. Farrey
