Abstract:
Telemedicine, as defined by the National Telecommunications and Information Administration, is the use of electronic communication and information technologies to provide or support clinical care at a distance. The State of Arizona made a far-reaching decision in 1996 to provide care for its underserved rural populations, particularly in smaller towns, reservations and prisons. Challenges for Arizona are its large geographic size, its lack of broadband telecommunications systems in rural areas, and its cultural diversity compared with many other states. In addition, rising costs in health care had led to the closure of critical facilities in Arizona’s rural communities. Keywords: still images, peripheral modalities, Arizona Medical College, broadband network, e-health, distance learning, clinics
