Abstract:

The events of September 11 highlighted the need for effective disaster planning. Already a requirement for NCCHC accreditation, few plans withstand scrutiny when common complications of emergencies are considered. These deficiencies often do not become apparent because the scenarios chosen for drills rarely provide an adequate test of the medical delivery system. Some correctional programs even fail to involve their medical staff in any disaster drills. The objective of a disaster plan is to assure that adequate resources are available to assess, treat, and observe injured parties.
