Abstract:

β€œIs this jail?” visitors to the pod ask. Quiet, clean, orderly, peaceful, safe, busy inmates, no TV, classical or meditative music, an abundance of quality reading materials, 12 hours a day of addictions programming, everyone treated with dignity and respect, minimal professional staff involvement, inmates mentoring and facilitating groups, a genuine supportive community teaching pro-social values, people getting better not worse – could this be happening in jail? Dramatically increased rehabilitative programs even in the current budget crisis? Rave reviews from everyone who walks through the doors and security issues virtually off the radar screen? Where is it? Is it for real? How does it work? Could this model of service be happening in a jail?
