Abstract:

The registered nurse working in the correctional environment faces a daunting challenge, managing patients who often arrive intoxicated and psychotic with co-morbid conditions that give pause to even the most experienced ER physician. Many days, the correctional nurse feels more like a fireman than a nurse, running from patient to patient “putting out fires” in the frustrating attempt to meet the demanding health care needs of this unique patient population. While the demands placed upon correctional nurses are often overwhelming, the opportunity to work in such an autonomous, dynamic and rapidly developing specialty can offer the nurse a rewarding and satisfying career.
