It is reprinted with permission of the author and publisher. This is the first part of a two-part article which presents a survey of women in the Cook County Jail. Part II, which will appear in the November/December 2004 issue of Correctional Health Care Reports, will address other areas of concern to this population, including employment, government assistance, sources of income, prostitution, and the issue of self-esteem and its critical role in achieving goals.
