Abstract:

When I was 17, I did something that wasn’t very smart. As a prank, I walked up to a Photomat and stuck the toy gun through the window. To my astonishment, the cashier turned away, removed the cash from her register, and handed it to me. Stupidly, I put the money in my pocket and ran home. Michigan law makes no distinction between an armed robbery with a real gun and one with a toy. So, I was sentenced to prison. As a teenager heading for an adult detention facility, I knew life would never be the same. But I had no idea my punishment would include systematic sexual abuse.
