Abstract:

When Juli Garretson was arrested for retail fraud, she allegedly informed Officer Altobelli, the booking officer, that she was an insulin-dependent diabetic and that she was already overdue for her current dose. The officer told her that the jail did not supply insulin but that she could arrange for insulin to be delivered to the jail. Her request to be transferred to the Oakland County Jail, where she knew insulin was provided to inmates, was denied. Garretson also claimed that she told the officer who escorted her to a holding cell about her medical condition and that he said that he would “see what he could do.” However, she did not receive any insulin and, as a result, suffered throughout the night from insulin deprivation and high blood sugar.
