This is part one of a twopart series on Avian Influenza (H5N1). In Part I, we will discuss the early spread of H5N1 and what it means to correctional institutions. We will also talk about the planning, resources, and coordination that will be necessary in the event of a pandemic. Our next issue will address the issues of absenteeism, treatment, training, education, and containment.
