Abstract:

This is part one of a twopart series on Avian Influenza (H5N1). In Part I, we will discuss the early spread of H5N1 and what it means to correctional institutions. We will also talk about the planning, resources, and coordination that will be necessary in the event of a pandemic. Our next issue will address the issues of absenteeism, treatment, training, education, and containment. The continued spread of Avian Influenza (H5N1) across Asia and Europe has led to increasing concerns that we are headed for a pandemic of epic proportions.
