Abstract:

Many correctional systems offer inmates social skills training. This training targets issues that may be related to an inmate’s involvement in criminal activity and subsequent incarceration. The issues commonly addressed include: Anger management; Stress management; Effective communication; Problem-solving; and The principles of relapse prevention. Although most inmates may benefit from increasing these social skills, the inmates most in need of these skills, inmates whose behavior has resulted in placement on long-term segregation units, are typically unable to participate in such programming.
