Correctional Health Care in India—What Is Done in Maharashtra State Prisons

Abstract:
In 2002, the world population was 6.2 billion people. Of these, 8.75 million were in prison—i.e., one out of every 700 people worldwide was behind bars (Walmsley, 2003). The United States had 2,135,901 convicted prisoners, while India had 322,357 inmates. In the Indian state of Maharashtra, the focus of this article, the prison population rate was 24.8 /100,000 in the period 2003-2004. This article summarizes the author’s observations, drawn from a recent visit, on the health care provided to inmates in the custody of Maharashtra Department of Corrections.Keywords: custodial, punitive, central, district, special, open, Food Safety, Diet, Dental, Mental health, Illness, Morbidity
