Abstract:
H1N1 influenza (previously referred to as swine fl u) has received a great deal of attention. The news and print media have bombarded us with information about the global reach of the virus, the growing number of confi rmed cases, and, in rare instances, its potential to cause death. Although the H1N1 fl u has proven (at least up until now) to be relatively mild in most people, we must remain cautions and diligent because we still know little about the virus and whether, in the long term, the health risks associated with infection will increase. In turn, as the outside world continues to work feverishly to control the spread of H1N1 in the community, protecting inmates and staff in the closed correctional environment has created its own unique set of challenges. Keywords: Symptoms, Transmission, antivirals, Prevention, compensation and leave policy, segregation, visitation, hand sanitizers
