Abstract:

Rheumatology is practiced very differently in penal systems and the outside world. First and quite obviously, there are more men than women in correctional systems, and many rheumatic diseases are more common in women. Secondly, because of fiscal restraints, some rheumatoid medications are not readily available in correctional institutions and are obtained only through special request. Lastly, newer medications, especially “biologic agents,” are not only expensive but some must be given intravenously, which is beyond the capabilities of most facilities. These problems are not insurmountable, however. With thought and planning, we can overcome them.
