Abstract:

“Pregnant” and “prisoner” are not two words we generally associate with each other. Yet, each year some proportion of jailed or imprisoned women will turn out to be pregnant. In this article, we examine fi rst the prevalence of pregnancy among women jailed and imprisoned; then, we explore the challenges and benefits that incarceration provides these women, their children, and families. We also outline the challenges that correctional systems face when confronted with pregnant inmates. Finally, we discuss some potential solutions and community resources.
