Abstract:

Risk is the uncertainty that something bad will occur. A risk management function attempts to identify, evaluate, and modify organizational risks that could result in a loss. Risk management is a concurrent as well as a retrospective process that, in a correctional setting, quantifies and addresses potential financial threats that could harm inmates, staff, and visitors. It is the process of using policies, procedures, protocols, and systems to reduce the likelihood of errors and /or adverse outcomes. Risk management programs generally emphasize quality of care, trends, and potential problem areas. Correctional facilities encounter two types of risk: speculative and pure.
