Abstract:
Our regular review of important court decisions analyzes three important cases: In one, Valentine v. Collier, 993 F.3d 270 (5th Cir. 2021), a federal appeals court ruled that concerns by inmates at a Texas state geriatric prison over actions taken by prison officials concerning COVID-19 protections did not amount to deliberate indifference by those officials. In a second case, Campbell v. Kallas, 2020 WL 7230235 (W.D.Wis. 2020), a federal district court ruled that Wisconsin corrections officials must provide a transgender inmate with access to gender-confirming surgery, as they were deliberately indifferent to her need for medically necessary treatment. In a third case, Lance v. Morris, 985 F.3d 787 (10th Cir. 2021), a federal appeals court ruled that an Oklahoma inmate can move forward with most of his claims that jail officials were indifferent to his medical emergency, likely resulting in his permanent impotence. Keywords: Covid-19 Protections; Gender-Confirming Surgery; Valentine v.
