Abstract:

When nurses are familiar with the health characteristics of the population served at a prison, jail or other detention facility they are better able to elicit pertinent information during intake screening and subsequent health assessments resulting in development of more pertinent and effective health care plans. This article reviews how population health data can be used to improve screening, diagnosis, and care, using as an example a study of the health characteristics—including respiratory ailments, chronic cardiovascular disease, and sexually transmitted diseases—of inmates in the state correctional system in New York.
