Abstract:
This brief review summarizes “Flattening the Curve for Incarcerated Populations—Covid-19 in Jails and Prisons,” by Matthew J. Akiyama, Anne C. Spaulding, and Josiah D. Rich, published in the New England Journal of Medicine (online April 2, 2020, doi:10.1056/NEJMp2005687). The authors contend that prisons and jails should be viewed as “reservoirs that could lead to epidemic resurgence if the epidemic is not adequately addressed in these facilities everywhere” and urge “three levels of preparedness”—preventing incoming infections, controlling its spread within affected facilities, and increasing resource levels to meet the high burden of care COVID-19 requires. Keywords: Public Health and COVID-19 in Jails and Prisons
