Abstract:

The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) has devoted extensive coverage to the emerging Coronavirus COVID-19 and the status of efforts to control and prevent its spread. Prisons would appear to be one of the safest places from contact with the disease, but while inmates are confined, staff come and go every day, and encounters with the virus are likely to grow more frequent. Jails, where inmate populations cycle in and out with far greater frequency, are even more vulnerable. This “primer” on the COVID-19 coronavirus addresses basic issues in transmission, treatment, and prevention, and includes frequently asked questions received by the CDC, with helpful answers. Correctional Health Care Report’s coverage of Covid-19 is being made available at no charge.
