Abstract: 

Efforts to forge stronger links between criminal justice agencies and academia are a powerful and under-utilized route to fostering health careers in corrections, developing clinical skills among students, building our program for public health, and supporting epidemiological research. This commentary by a nationally respected Emeritus Professor of Correctional Health shows how academic-correctional partnerships can address the workforce shortage that plagues the field will improve health outcomes for incarcerated patients and highlight correctional health as a profession for providers, and argues that it is time for correctional administrators at the federal, state, and county levels, and health care professionals throughout the system, to advocate for and take concrete steps to build these vital connections.
