Abstract:

A depressingly low percentage of jail inmates receive assistance, and inadequate resources are often to blame. But even when an effort is made to provide services such as substance abuse treatment, mental health counseling, educational instruction, or employment assistance, many inmates simply refuse to be helped. Why? In this article, we review a study published in the International Journal of Offender Therapy and Comparative Criminology, “Why Do Some Jail Inmates Not Engage in Treatment and Services?” by Candace L. Meyer, June P. Tangney, Jeffrey Stuewig, and Kelly E. Moore, a group of Virginia-based psychologists who tried to find an answer to explain why inmates fail to take advantage of beneficial services and what inhibits or forestalls jail inmates from participating in services that are available to them?
