Abstract:

Hypertension is the most common reason for a visit to see a primary care provider and antihypertensive drugs are the most frequently prescribed medication in the community. Hypertension is more prevalent among incarcerated persons than in the general community and a significant contributor to death, among inmates and former inmates, from cardiovascular disease. Correctional nurses have a key role in the assessment and management of hypertension and other cardiovascular risk factors. Our regular “Nursing Essentials” feature this issue is a refresher on the diagnosis and treatment of hypertension, presented in the form of a case study and multiple-choice quiz, with answers and explanations, based in part on revised guidelines for the management of high blood pressure released by the Eighth Joint National Committee (JNC8).
