Abstract:

Correctional managers should be on the lookout for Zika virus infection in their populations and consider what role their facility ought to take in the prevention, identification, and management of this new pathogen. As of October 19, 2016 all states with the exception of Alaska, have reported at least one case of travel-associated Zika virus. This article examines our current knowledge about Zika, its identifying diagnostic symptoms, routes of transmission, and effective approaches to screening, diagnosis, and treatment. The report highlights infection control practices recently adopted by the Miami-Dade County Jail and summarizes the most important recommendations of a recent Bureau of Prisons bulletin, “Zika Virus.”
