Abstract:

Psychotropic medication is a necessary component of treatment for serious mental illnesses. Consequently, correctional facilities must make several classes of psychotropic medication and several medications within each class available to their inmate population as a matter of obligation and the recognized standard of care. In this comprehensive review, Dr. Kathryn Burns outlines the essential medications for both prison and jail formularies, examines issues including administration, storage, inventory, and handling; side effects; and efficacy and contraindications. Includes a sample psychotropic medication formulary for a general adult prison facility.
