Abstract:

In this article, Catherine Knox looks at a classic example of a patient seen in the correctional setting—one who has a chronic mental health condition, comorbid chronic health problems and a likely history of substance abuse, and who is only partially compliant with treatment. Non-compliance is a major problem in correctional health; here, we examine the principle causes for non-compliance, and simple yet very effective ways to improve medication adherence and patient outcomes.
