Abstract:
In 1991, the Texas Legislature funded the Texas Criminal Justice Treatment Initiative. As of 1998, there were three prisons with a nine to twelve month Intensive In-Prison Therapeutic Community Program (ITC), using a total of 800 beds. The ITC program includes a three-month aftercare program in a community residential facility, followed by specialized parole supervision and nine to twelve months of outpatient treatment. In fiscal year 1997, 883 inmates completed the program. This piece describes and evaluates the program. Keywords: best practices; Texas Criminal Justice Treatment Initiative
