Abstract:

This paper calls attention to the limitations of using denial as an organizing principle and offers an alternative approach to working with youth who have difficulty taking responsibility for their sexual offending behavior. It is proposed that using "presumptive realities" as an organizing principle, rather than denial, helps to focus therapists on their role in the therapeutic process. This approach has the potential to minimize potential coercive forces that could be the result of forcing a youth offender out of a denial stage.
