Abstract:
At its recent June 18th meeting in Chicago, the American Medical Association’s House of Delegates, the organization’s policy setting body, adopted a tougher position on underage drinking for the nation‘s largest physician‘s group. The AMA met after the National Institute of Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism report, “Underage Drinking: A Major Public Health Challenge” was released. The new policy guidelines were spurred by the presentation to the House by the Association’s Council of Scientific Affairs of a report outlining the effects of alcohol on the brains of underage drinkers. This article looks at the alcohol issues addressed in the report and the AMA’s response.Keywords: Association’s Council of Scientific Affairs;
