Abstract:

The use of structured actuarial tools has been the preferred form of risk assessment over the past decade in court settings and forensic assessment. In contrast with unstructured assessments that primarily rely on clinical judgment, actuarial methods are intended to reduce the influence of subjective judgment by relying on the universal application and analysis of factors empirically related to risk. Research has demonstrated that, compared to unstructured clinical assessment, actuarial tools provide greater utility for assessing future sexual and violent risk.
