Abstract:
Intimate partner poisoning is an uncommon but potentially lethal form of domestic violence that can be especially difficult to detect. A 2026 Department of Homeland Security intelligence bulletin identified 17 documented cases involving chemical or biological toxins between 2014 and 2025, resulting in at least 11 deaths, with more than half of the incidents occurring in the past five years. Perpetrators may exploit readily available toxins and symptoms that mimic natural illness, complicating recognition and investigation. This article examines substances and methods used by poisoners, notable criminal cases, psychological characteristics associated with poisoning, risks to bystanders, and the specialized training needed by first responders. It also outlines criminal, protective-order, and civil remedies available to survivors. Keywords: Intimate Partner Poisoning; Domestic Violence; Chemical And Biological Toxins; Lethal Violence; First Responders; Victim Remedies
