Abstract:

New FBI data offer an unusually detailed picture of how domestic violence differs from other violent crime—and why those differences matter for prevention, prosecution, and victim services. From 2020 through 2024, incidents involving domestic relationships increased as a share of reported violent crime and were far more likely to occur in the home, involve alcohol, and result in victim injury. Nearly three-fourths of domestic violence victims were female, while more than three-fourths of offenders were male. Drawing on NIBRS data, the report also reveals important differences in weapons, victim and offender ages, and relationship patterns, providing practitioners with a valuable empirical profile of domestic violence in the United States.
