Abstract: 

Our regular review of important appellate decisions on correctional health care includes Cartagena v. Aptos, in which the 4th Circuit found that an inmate was properly placed in prison treatment program because the inmate was found to be seriously mentally ill, as well as assaultive, disruptive, unmanageable and unable to function in the general prison population; and Jackson v. Esser, where the 7th Circuit found that a prison nurse’s treatment of inmate after learning that he had been deprived of water for five days did not demonstrate deliberate indifference.
