Abstract:
In 2008, the authors began analyzing data that linked men who strangle or choke women with men who kill law enforcement officers. An analysis of data from 2017 found that 33 out of 44 (75%) officers killed in the line of duty were murdered by men with a history of domestic violence. A similar study from Idaho examined law enforcement homicides from 1993-2013 and found that 80% of killers history of domestic violence and 50% had a strangulation assault in the public record. This article reviews the findings of these and other recent studies that have found a high correlation between men who kill police officers and arrests for strangulation, describes the methodologies used in these studies, and recommends strategies for applying these results in police work on domestic violence. Keywords: Strangulation and Cop-Killers; Officer-Involved Critical Incidents; “Loaded-God Complex”
