Abstract:
This article highlights information that every professional who is working with victims of intimate partner violence, sexual assault, elder abuse, child abuse, or animal abuse needs to know about the link between strangulation, children, sex, and homicides. First, it addresses the subject of child victims of strangulation/choking as well as child witnesses to these incidents. The second emerging issue focuses on the use of strangulation (usually called “choking”, “breath play” or “erotic asphyxia”) during sex. The third emerging issue involves the murders of women, after long histories of domestic violence, in which the death is then staged to look like a suicide or accident. Keywords: Child Victims of Strangulation; Impact of Pornography and Pop Culture on Norms of Sexual Behavior; Prevalence of Hidden Homicides
